The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, has urged the party’s governorship candidates to conduct issue-based campaigns and reject hate speech, ethnic and religious profiling, violence and promises they do not intend to fulfil ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Senator Mark gave the charge on Monday in Abuja during a consultation meeting with ADC governorship candidates from across the country at the party’s National Secretariat.

The meeting formed part of the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections and provided an opportunity for the party leadership to engage directly with its governorship candidates as campaigns gather momentum.

Addressing the candidates, Senator Mark said the ADC’s campaign should reflect the values and principles of the party and its vision for a better Nigeria.

He cautioned the candidates against the use of inflammatory language and divisive tactics, stressing that the party would not support hate speech, ethnic or religious profiling, or violence in any form.

“We are ADC. Our campaign must reflect the kind of country that we would like to build. Avoid hate speech, ethnic or religious profiling. We cannot be associated with violence in whatever form. Unlike the ruling party and the President, ADC does not believe that all is fair in politics.”

He also warned the governorship candidates against making unrealistic or insincere promises to voters.

According to him, politicians must be mindful of the consequences of making commitments they have no intention of keeping, as such conduct could damage public trust and undermine the integrity of the party.

“Do not make promises that you do not intend to keep when you come to office,” he admonished the candidates, emphasizing the importance of honesty, accountability and responsible leadership.

Candidates Urged to Follow ADC Governance and Ethical Principles

Senator Mark further urged all the governorship candidates to familiarise themselves with the ADC’s Governance and Ethical Principles as contained in the party’s Orange Book, as well as the party’s manifesto.

He stressed that adherence to the party’s established principles would help ensure that candidates remain aligned with the ADC’s vision and values throughout the campaign and in office.

The engagement with the candidates underscored the party’s commitment to building a political movement anchored on ethical leadership, responsible governance and policies that address the concerns of Nigerians.

They particularly noted the position of the party and its presidential candidate on measures aimed at reducing the burden of fuel costs on Nigerians, including the proposal to restore fuel subsidy as part of efforts to lower pump prices.

The governorship candidates subsequently reaffirmed their loyalty to the African Democratic Congress and pledged to work diligently to win their respective elections and strengthen the party across the states.
