The National Youth Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Balarabe Rufai, has condemned the alleged harassment and arbitrary detention of ADC members and political stakeholders in Kaduna State, calling for respect for citizens’ rights, due process and accountability.
Rufai made the remarks on Sunday, 18 October 2026, during an engagement with opposition youths and political leaders in Kaduna, where participants expressed concern over alleged actions against members of the opposition.
He maintained that political disagreement and peaceful opposition should not be treated as criminal offences, stressing that citizens must be able to participate in democratic activities without fear of intimidation.
According to Rufai, reports of arrests and detention involving ADC members raise concerns about political freedom and the protection of citizens’ rights. He urged the relevant authorities to ensure that all affected individuals are treated in accordance with the law.
ADC Youth Leader Calls for Investigation and Accountability
Rufai also disclosed that his office had received reports containing serious allegations against an officer reportedly linked to Operation Fushin Kada in Kaduna State.
He called for an urgent and independent investigation, emphasising that the allegations must be established through credible evidence before any conclusions are reached.
He further stated that, where wrongdoing is proven, the ADC would pursue accountability through lawful channels, including petitions to relevant security authorities, oversight institutions and the courts.
The ADC National Youth Leader reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful political engagement, warning that allegations of intimidation would be addressed through lawful civic action and demonstrations rather than violence.
He also expressed solidarity with young people recently released from detention and their families, while calling for due process and justice for those who may still be facing detention or legal proceedings.
Emphasis on Strategic Political Engagement
During his visit to Kaduna, Rufai acknowledged the contributions of political stakeholders, youth organisations and other participants who supported the engagement.
He also paid a solidarity and courtesy visit to Comrade Sanusi Maikudi, popularly known as Dan Iyan Jama'a. Rufai described their discussion as insightful, highlighting the importance of combining political courage with strategic thinking and purposeful action.
In addition, he visited Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, who represents Kaduna Central, for discussions on youth participation, political development and the responsibilities of the Office of the National Youth Leader. Rufai expressed appreciation for the senator’s reception, encouragement and support.
Upholding Democratic Rights Through Peaceful Participation
Rufai’s statements underscore the importance of political freedom, lawful opposition and accountability in a democratic society. The ability of citizens to express dissent, support political movements and participate in public affairs is central to democratic governance.
The ADC continues to emphasise the importance of protecting democratic participation and ensuring that political disagreements are addressed through lawful and peaceful processes.
As Nigeria’s political environment evolves, respect for citizens’ rights, impartial investigations and constructive engagement remain essential to strengthening public trust and democratic institutions.
