The African Democratic Congress has raised serious concerns over the integrity of the just concluded Anambra gubernatorial election, describing the exercise as a cash driven process that undermines Nigeria’s democratic values.
In a statement issued after reviewing reports from across the state, the party said the election resembled an open market more than a transparent democratic contest. According to the ADC, widespread vote buying was carried out in full public view, with bundles of naira exchanged at polling units and political actors openly inducing voters.
The party noted that such conduct clearly violates the Electoral Act and erodes public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Equally worrying, the ADC said, was the silence and visible inaction of institutions responsible for safeguarding electoral integrity. Security operatives were reported to have watched as voters were harassed or financially compromised, while some electoral officials appeared overwhelmed or indifferent to violations occurring at their polling units.
The party warned that if the Independent National Electoral Commission adopts a similar posture in the 2027 general election, Nigerians have every reason to be concerned about the future of democratic governance. It added that international observers and partners are already watching the country’s democratic processes closely.
Reaffirming its position, the ADC stated that Nigeria’s progress depends on free, credible, and transparent elections where leadership is earned through integrity and service rather than the crude exchange of money.
The party called on electoral institutions to strengthen enforcement, uphold the law without compromise, and restore the confidence of citizens ahead of future elections.
