The African Democratic Congress has welcomed Nigeria’s prompt intervention following reports of a coup attempt in the Benin Republic, commending the Federal Government for acting decisively to defend constitutional order in the neighbouring country.
In a statement released today, the party acknowledged the expediency of the President’s actions but emphasized that such interventions must align with the legal provisions of the Nigerian Constitution. The ADC highlighted the need for the National Assembly to ratify any deployment of military or security forces outside the country, as required by relevant constitutional sections.
While applauding the government’s speed in Benin, the party questioned why similar urgency was not displayed during past crises, such as the instability in Guinea-Bissau, when a former Nigerian President was trapped. The ADC said this inconsistency raises critical questions about the factors that determine when Nigeria acts decisively abroad and when it hesitates.
“Consistency in foreign policy is essential for any nation seeking leadership in regional democracy and stability,” the statement said. “Selective intervention gives credence to allegations that actions in Benin may have been influenced by external powers.”
The ADC further stressed that Nigeria’s ability to respond quickly abroad must be matched by decisive action at home. The statement criticised the government for failing to confront domestic insecurity with the same urgency, noting that banditry, terrorism, and violent crime continue to hold communities hostage, displace families, and threaten citizens’ lives.
“A government that can act swiftly abroad must also act decisively at home,” the ADC said. “The defence of democracy does not begin in neighbouring countries; it begins with protecting Nigerian lives, restoring security, and rebuilding trust between citizens and the state.”
The party concluded by reiterating its opposition to any form of extra-constitutional takeover and emphasizing that strengthening domestic democracy, improving citizens’ lives, and allowing opposition voices to thrive are the best safeguards against military adventurism.
