The African Democratic Congress has raised serious concerns over the worsening plight of indigenous contractors and pensioners across Nigeria, condemning the Federal Government’s continued failure to honour its financial obligations.
In a statement released today, the party noted that for several weeks, indigenous contractors have camped at the Federal Ministry of Finance with coffins, demanding payment for work they have completed. Similarly, pensioners have threatened to stage naked protests if long-overdue pensions and entitlements are not paid. The ADC described these extreme measures as a reflection of government insensitivity and administrative failure.
“No serious government allows its citizens to be pushed to the point of coffins and naked protests before their grievances are taken seriously,” the party said. “This only confirms that the APC-led government is indifferent to the damage its inactions cause—not just to ordinary citizens, but to the nation’s image.”
The statement further criticized the government’s claims of strong financial performance. “If the national finances are truly robust, as the APC keeps asserting, why are contractors still owed over N500 billion for completed projects? Why are pensioners still waiting for increments and palliatives approved over a year ago? Ordinary Nigerians cannot continue to drown in unpaid debts while the government celebrates revenue achievements,” the ADC added.
The party also highlighted the government’s focus on pre-election activities, including distributing campaign vehicles and mobilising political coordinators, while failing to meet even basic obligations to citizens. “A government that cannot pay its own contractors or honour its commitments to pensioners has no moral authority to campaign for another term,” the ADC stated.
Expressing solidarity with affected Nigerians, the ADC pledged to stand with both contractors and pensioners. “Where this government destroys trust, we will rebuild it. Where it abandons its responsibilities, we will uphold them. The suffering and humiliation endured by these citizens must end now, and we are prepared to join in their protests if immediate action is not taken,” the statement concluded.
