ADC Welcomes Peter Obi as He Officially Joins the Party

The African Democratic Congress ADC has officially welcomed His Excellency Mr Peter Obi, former two-term Governor of Anambra State and Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, following his formal defection to the party on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. The declaration took place at a rally held at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel in Enugu and signals a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Mr Obi’s decision to join the ADC comes at a time of growing national debate around governance, economic direction, and leadership credibility. His move is widely viewed as a strategic step aimed at building a broader political platform capable of responding to Nigeria’s current challenges.

The declaration rally attracted key political stakeholders from across the country. In attendance were Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator Sam Egwu, and the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Chief David Mark, who formally received Mr Obi into the party on behalf of the national leadership.

Addressing party members and supporters at the event, Mr Obi described the ADC as a credible vehicle to rescue Nigeria from poor governance. He emphasized the need for disciplined leadership, prudent economic management, and a renewed commitment to public service rooted in integrity and accountability.

In the immediate aftermath of the event, questions were raised regarding the status of Mr Obi’s exit from the Labour Party. His former running mate, Datti Baba Ahmed, initially suggested that the move was limited to a coalition arrangement rather than a full defection.

However, subsequent confirmations from the ADC and reports by major national media organizations have established that Mr Obi formally resigned from the Labour Party and completed all requirements to join the African Democratic Congress.

The ADC leadership has described his entry into the party as a significant boost to its national outlook and reform agenda. According to party officials, the development strengthens the ADC’s resolve to present Nigerians with a people centered alternative ahead of 2027.

With this declaration, the African Democratic Congress says it remains focused on building a united political movement driven by competence, inclusion, and the collective aspiration to reposition Nigeria on a path of sustainable growth and democratic renewal.
