The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has welcomed the prompt clarification by the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the alleged upload of candidates to the Commission's nomination portal, describing the clarification as an important step in protecting the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process.

According to the ADC, INEC has unequivocally confirmed that a document circulated by Mr. Nafiu Bala Gombe, which purported to show that he had obtained the Commission's access code and uploaded candidates on behalf of the party for the 2027 General Election, was forged. The Commission also confirmed that the claim itself was entirely false.

INEC's Clarification Reinforces the Integrity of the Nomination Process

The ADC noted that INEC's response effectively puts to rest the false narrative that unauthorized individuals had gained access to the Commission's restricted nomination platform.

The party emphasized that access to INEC's nomination portal is strictly regulated and reserved for duly recognized officials of registered political parties. By confirming that the circulated document was forged and that no such upload took place, the Commission has reaffirmed the integrity of its nomination procedures.

The ADC described the clarification as reassuring for Nigerians and all stakeholders who rely on the credibility of the country's electoral institutions.

ADC Raises Concern Over Alleged Attempt to Mislead the Public

While welcoming INEC's intervention, the ADC stated that the issue extends beyond the repeated false statements attributed to Mr. Nafiu Bala Gombe.

According to the party, the matter now concerns what it considers to be a deliberate attempt to mislead the Nigerian public through the circulation of false information and documents purportedly linked to the electoral commission.

The ADC argued that publicly claiming to have accessed INEC's restricted nomination platform and exercised powers reserved exclusively for recognized party officials is a serious allegation that should not be ignored.

The party maintained that such claims have the potential to create public confusion, undermine confidence in Nigeria's democratic institutions, and erode trust in the country's electoral processes if left unaddressed.

Call for Investigation and Legal Action

In light of INEC's clarification, the ADC has called on the Commission and relevant law enforcement agencies to take all necessary steps to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged forgery and false claims.

The party urged that anyone found to have originated, circulated, or promoted the alleged falsehood should be investigated and, where appropriate, prosecuted in accordance with Nigerian law.

According to the ADC, protecting the integrity of the electoral process requires accountability for actions that could mislead the public or compromise confidence in democratic institutions.

Commitment to Credible Democratic Processes

The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, the rule of law, and respect for Nigeria's electoral framework.

The party encouraged members of the public, the media, and political stakeholders to rely on verified information from official sources, particularly on matters relating to electoral processes and party nominations.

It also expressed confidence that INEC will continue to uphold its constitutional responsibility by safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria's electoral system and taking appropriate action against any attempt to undermine public trust.

As preparations for the 2027 General Election continue, the ADC reiterated its commitment to conducting its affairs in accordance with the law while supporting efforts to strengthen the credibility and transparency of Nigeria's democracy.
